The Gift of Healing: A Legacy of Hope
Beatrice C. Engstrand, MD, FAAN
April 1990
In this moving testament to the powers of faith and a belief in "positive imaging," Engstrand describes her odyssey of pain that began when she was 20, and a student at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. After the discovery of a malignancy in the roof of her mouth, she underwent massive facial surgery that left her impaired and mutilated as well as depressed. Yet shortly after the surgery she was back in medical school, from which she graduated in 1984, all the while undergoing torturous rehabilitation therapy and prosthesis adjustment.
