About

Light is an incredible phenomenon. Our definition defines it as a small range of wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. It brings life to our world in so many ways from chlorophyll in plants that create oxygen and food to the light that we see. With light we can see colors, but also see what objects are made of through spectral analysis. I list this first, since I am after all an Illumination Engineer. Light can also be a form of art. It shapes how our artists view life. Monet and others knew this when they painted their masterpieces. If we go beyond the paintings, light itself can be a medium. Building facades and interiors can come to life with specific application of lighting of each surface. There is something to be said about lighting of the Lincoln Memorial, or the natural light inside of Grand Central Station. Light is also emotional. It can change our mood at any time with a change in the direction or application. It can bring us together and make a more intimate setting. It can also make us feel better where natural daylight is not available year round. Light can also make us more confident in dark areas, or give us energy for dancing. Last it can effect us physically. Light can heal wounds, as well as cause cancer. Light is all around us. How we shape it can effect us in many ways. I think of these concepts when I teach a class on lighting, create a new optic, or design the lighting for a space. I look at how lighting will effect occupants both emotionally and physically. I use my skills to shape light in all of these ways.
